Another one of those blog posts when I should be sleeping. But..I'm not, and I've neglected my blog long enough. I'm really working on trying to not forget about it for months on end. It's one of my resolutions to myself.
Got into a discussion about the monarchy while I was eating, Bear found a couple of pictures of King George, when he was a baby with Queen Victoria, so of course that lead me into the Queen Mum, and an argument over her name. I won. It was Elizabeth, just like her daughter. :) My Gran was a lover of all things royal. She was a stout supporter of the Queen, and the Queen Mum. She was over the moon when Charles and Di got married. And she would have been devastated when they separated, but she was already gone. My mother was in love with the Royals too. We had Charles and Di cookie tins, she had those mini silver collecter spoons that were released for the wedding, a few small china plates etc. Being bi-national he he, I love saying that instead of dual citizen...I grew up with both a president and a Queen. And while the monarchy isn't a monarchy in the same sense that it once was, I have to say, I prefer the British and Commonwealth methods of governing.
Sure we've got problems with politicians in Canada, but we've also got more say in the way the country is run, we can laugh at our politicians and not fear being gunned down for it. Freedom of Speech for a Canadian is a lot different than it is for an American. We're encouraged to shout from the rooftops, and let our politicians know when we're unhappy. Unfortunately, sometimes the wrong people get put in power, and don't listen to the little people all the time, but at least we can tell them to fuck off to their faces.
My first new post in this blog came on the day that we lost Jack Layton. His funeral is tomorrow in Toronto. I'm working, so I won't be able to attend. Jack was one of those politicians that really seemed to listen. He had a very charismatic manner, and was very engaged with people. I've never heard a bad thing said about him, and he wasn't Opposition Leader Layton, he was Jack to a lot of people. I said in that other post, that he could have been our next Prime Minister. Had this dream come about, we would see a new Canada spring up.
I know that not all the people can be pleased all of the time, but the current government is distancing itself from the people that make the Country run. We've always had the stigma of the "Polite" country, and we've been far too Polite for far to long with the people that continue to empty our wallets, and make bad choices.
We've become to complacent to just let the rich get richer, and the poor lose their homes. We're one of the largest oil producing countries in the world, yet our fuel prices are astronomically higher than they are in the US, who buys the oil from us, with a weaker dollar.
Higher fuel prices = higher transport costs. Higher transport costs = higher prices. I guess maybe it's a supply and demand thing...the US is bigger in population, more cars, more people buying gas...stronger buying power? I don't buy it. Gas prices keep going up here, while oil prices are dropping. It makes no sense. Oil is trading for less this year, than it was at the same time last year, yet we're a good $.30/ltr higher in prices than this time last year.
But I digress.
In other news...I'm sleepy. LOL still short handed at work, and still working too many hours. On the bright side today, promoted one person, and hired another, so things are looking up!
G'night universe
