I love to read. In a good month I can devour about 4 books, in a slow month only 2. Below is a list of some of my favourites over the years...not necessarily in any particular order of favouriteness.
J.R.R. Tolkein
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
The Silmarrilion
R.A. Salvatore
Award Winning Fantasy Novel Writer.
One of my all time Favourite Series and Characters was written by Mr. Salvatore Drizzt Do'Urden, the count of novels in the Drizzt saga is up to 21. Too numerous to list here individually, but well worth looking into.
Kelley Armstrong
If you need a quick Supernatural fix, then her Otherworld novels are a sure fire bundle of fun and intrigue. Her last few books did leave a few loose ends, almost as if, she just ran out of steam, but overall, I'd highly recommend this author and her books.
Anne Rice
A lot of today's Vampire stories owe inspiration to Anne Rice. The "modern" variant of vampire with all their awesome "super" powers had roots in Lestat, Louis, and Armand. She brought romance to the forefront with enough action to keep the reader...reading. She also did a wonderful series on the Mayfair Witches.
Guy Gavriel Kay
I was put onto the Fionavar Tapestry by a friend at work. It starts out a bit of a dry read, but once you realize it was written quite a while back (my first clue was the "tape player") you grasp an understanding for the language used. The series begins in Toronto, so the close to home factor made it cool, and transports you into a wonderfully well thought out world, with connections to our own. If you're a lover of High Fantasy, then pick this up.
George R.R. Martin
I hate to put "bandwagon" type entries, but as I haven't watched the HBO series, this doesn't count. Said friend at work, has convinced me to start reading the Song of Ice and Fire series. It's what HBO's new hit Game of Thrones is based off of. I'll admit, I get aggravated with a few of the characters of the books, but that's really a sign of a great writer. If I can feel the emotion, and picture the anguish the character's are experiencing, then I can't help but enjoy it.
Christopher Paolini
Again, could be a bandwagon thing, but I just read the first 3 books a couple months back. I heard the movie was horrid, and so far from the books that it wasn't worth it, so I doubt I'll ever watch it. Another High Fantasy style series, and I have to say, for such a young author, he came very close to my beloved Tolkein's world creating ability. I am looking forward to the conclusion of the series, and I'm hoping that in Hollywood's new rush to "re-boot" everything, they'll give a real producer and screenwriter a shot at making Alagaesia come to life.
More to come...
